"Then why don't you eat something?" she asked.
"It's no use," said the Tiger sadly. "I've tried that, but I always get hungry again."

On dinner in a box, among other things

Today I ate some surprisingly delicious toasty pitas and hummus at the café at the Columbia (Maryland) Borders. I don't know if they coated the pitas in olive oil and MSG or what, but they were really fabulous.

Later we turned down the opportunity to go out for Indian food with S.'s parents, which was probably a good choice because S. was already feeling distressed enough about how little he had gotten done this weekend and because I am not really very hungry after all that hummus pita action, but it is also too bad, because I am once again not in the mood to cook.* So it's Whole Foods Market brand macaroni and cheese from a box for us! For some reason we have been completely unable to find our old favorite Annie's mild white cheddar macaroni and cheese in a box. It is not at the co-op, it is not at Giant, it is not at Whole Foods. I hope they have not discontinued it.

This Whole Foods macaroni and cheese in a box is, frankly, not up to snuff. First of all, the macaroni are too short, too stubby. It is just not right. Second of all, the cheese is orange, which I do not need in my cheese powder, but sure, okay, it's classic. But as it happens, this is not a classic yellowy orange in the tradition of Kraft. It has instead a weirdly pinkish tinge that I find disconcerting and wrong. Finally, the cheese has a funny extra flavor that I cannot put my finger on, like they added a powdered herb of some kind. I do not prefer it. Oh, Annie's mild white cheddar, I miss you so. Return to me!

* I did cook last night, some tasty leeks and pasta and my favorite herb salad. But you've already heard about those foods, so there wasn't anything much to say.
