"Then why don't you eat something?" she asked.
"It's no use," said the Tiger sadly. "I've tried that, but I always get hungry again."

The blackberry futures of Tycho Brahe

Last night I was caught out. I didn't bake the blackberry cake at all, because I am a lazy girl. But lo, one of our dinner guests had read ahead (hi, Bob!) and had been looking forward to it. Whoops. But I still have my blackberries, and we had a fine time despite the fact that we followed up the tasty homemade pizza with delicious guilty pleasure not-quite-thawed Pepperidge Farm 3-Layer Cake. Today I am tired, though, and life has lost its savor. How fleeting is joy, and how tedious my grading! At least I have a great big pile of theatrical theory to read, as well. Surely that will replenish the spring of my heart, or prime the pump of my gladness, or drive me directly to drink.

I also want to fast forward my life to the lovely scenario invented by self and friend Mark, in which I have a great tenure-track job at NYU and a charming little insanely expensive house in Brooklyn, where S. and I will raise our fabulous child Sophie, who will be, as Mark so perfectly put it, a "fearless adorable little book snob" who makes snide remarks and teaches all her friends how to smoke. In this wonderful future we will shop at Sahadis. But then this future is in competition with the parallel one S. and I have been working on, in which I get my fabulous job at the University of Michigan and we get to live in Ann Arbor and go to Zingermans all the time. Decisions, decisions. Good thing they will all be taken out of our hands when I wind up with a single job offer, from J. Q. Fingerman Technical College of South Central Utah.
