Judith loves her new ice-cream maker. If only she lived a little bit closer by, she could make me her tasty new variation on the Wild Wombat, the Slushy Wombat. (Poor wombat, he's feeling a bit... well, a bit slushy today.) Slushy fresh sorbet + vodka = a very pleasant thing to consume on a sultry Washington evening, and probably an evening where you are, too.
If you, unlike me, have an ice-cream maker, do what Judith tells you: "cook up roughly equal amounts of sugar and water in a pot. if you want to add some herbs or other flavorings (ginger, lavender, lemon zest), now's the time. cool. add some fruit that you've pureed. stir. strain if you want. chill. put it into the ice cream maker. hang out for a half hour." For a Slushy Wombat, you would want plenty of fresh ginger and some lime zest, and you would certainly want to strain out those fibrous ginger bits. She tells me that a ripe peach works well for the fruit, which gives it body and the right amount of sugar.
