"Then why don't you eat something?" she asked.
"It's no use," said the Tiger sadly. "I've tried that, but I always get hungry again."

Advanced Problems in Ordering: Cheesy Toasts

This is what happens when I try to order for myself in Spanish. After some consultation with Graduate Student Girl, who had graciously been pushing the limits of her Spanish for some time on my behalf,* I attempted to say that we would like some pan y tomate, but with cheese melted on top, would this be possible? It would not be possible, of course, because I was totally incomprehensible, but our waiter was too nice and too puzzled to give up. He attempted to get me to clarify, and I was rapidly reduced to making gestures that I hoped conveyed meltiness. Clearly they did not.

Lo, cheesy toasts become cheese and toast. Fortunately, pan y tomate by itself is very tasty, however, and so is cheese.

In unrelated news, I enjoyed this post on things foodish over at the fine Uncertain Principles.
