"Then why don't you eat something?" she asked.
"It's no use," said the Tiger sadly. "I've tried that, but I always get hungry again."

Good times, good times

Soon we will be off to lovely Providence for Thanksgiving vacation, where we will consume many delectable foods, without a doubt. I will be sure to tell you about them on our return. But in the meantime, I will leave you with a little story about last year's foodish adventures in that fine city.

S. and I were staying with our friend Beth, who was hosting (as she will be this year) Thanksgiving dinner for all and sundry. Beth and I cooked up a storm, and started drinking as we worked, beginning quite early in the day. By the time dinner rolled around, we were good and snozzled. The addition of wine accompanying the meal meant the snozzle got only deeper.

For dessert, we had prepared a number of tasty items, one of which was something called a pumpkin pie brulée. This is just like an ordinary pumpkin pie in every way, except that before you serve it, you sprinkle a thick layer of sugar over the topping and pop it under the broiler until it is nicely caramelized.

"Do you think we ought to cover the edge of the crust with foil, so it doesn't burn?" asked your faithful correspondent.

"Nah," said Beth. "We'll just keep an eye on it."

Well, you can imagine what happened. The bit that makes this story worth telling in even the smallest way (you were wondering, weren't you?) is that when I peeked into the oven and saw that the crust was flaming merrily away, I was incapable of doing anything but say, "Uh oh! Uh oh! On fire! Uh oh!" Fortunately Beth, who had not used up her few active neurons on speech, was able to take the necessary action. But in fact, as it turns out, there is something marvelously versatile and handy about my little speech. Try it, you'll like it.

Uh oh! On fire! Uh oh!
