the hungry tiger
"Then why don't you eat something?" she asked.
"It's no use," said the Tiger sadly. "I've tried that, but I always get hungry again."

The pristine page

Like our friend Graduate Student Girl, I like to eat while I work. Here are some things I have been reading with food lately:

G. K. Chesterton, The Man Who Was Thursday.
Aldous Huxley, Eyeless in Gaza.
Herb Clark, "Communities, Commonalities, and Communication."
Amitav Ghosh, The Shadow Lines.
Stephen Levinson, Pragmatics.
My students' response papers on Death Comes for the Archbishop.

So far, no catastrophic meetings of food with paper, but it's surely only a matter of time.

Did I remember to tell you how much I am loving Father Brown? (I'm reading a five-million-page Omnibus.) The stories are so so wry and wonderful! Thank you for the recommendation.

While it has very little to do with food, I highly recommend another book by Ghosh: "In An Antique Land." Topics covered range from 12th century trade between India and Egypt, as well as an account of Ghosh's time spent studying sociology in rural Egypt. Academic-ish, but very readable.

And the tomatillo-sweet potato soup was lovely.
